London School of Economics - Marshall Building

Atrium Steelwork & Acoustic Cladding to Support New Smoke Extraction System plus Rooftop Plant Enclosures

Structural Steel Roof Alterations - LSE Marshall Building

Structural steel roof alterations at the London School of Economics Marshall Building included design, manufacture and installation of new atrium glazing support steelwork at 9th floor level, rooftop plant enclosure supports, and aluminium cladding. The project enhanced fire safety through installation of a smoke extraction system on the Level 9 terrace and atrium rooflight, while preserving the building’s original architectural design.

Key works involved:

  • Erecting a temporary roof structure
  • Removing planters
  • Installing lifting beams and new rooflight steelwork
  • Crane removal and reinstatement of atrium glazing
  • Fitting a plenum at the atrium top to support efficient smoke extraction. This ensures effective smoke removal, clear evacuation routes and compliance with fire regulations.
  • Fabricated and installed acoustic aluminium cladding and baffles to reduce noise in the atrium, particularly from stair users.

Rooftop Plant Enclosures

As part of the structural steel roof alterations at the London School of Economics Marshall Building, we designed, manufactured and installed support steels for the rooftop plant enclosures. These enclosures house essential mechanical and electrical plant equipment (such as HVAC units, adiabatic dry coolers for heat rejection, air handling units and associated services) on the roof level. They provide weather protection, secure housing and acoustic screening for the building’s building services systems.

The new support steels integrate seamlessly with the existing roof structure, ensuring structural stability while allowing full access for maintenance. This work was carried out alongside the atrium smoke extraction upgrades on Level 9, maintaining the building’s architectural aesthetics and panoramic rooftop terrace views. The enclosures help optimise building performance, support energy-efficient operations and comply with modern MEP standards without compromising the overall design integrity.
